NetHack

I’ve been playing Nethack on and off for a day or so, and find it highly playable but frustrating at times. I guess it’s the permanent death thing that can get annoying, slowly building your character up, then for it all to be thrown away and have to start again. Sometimes for no apparent reason, open door, bam you're dead.

This breaks one of the golden rules of game-play, the player shouldn’t be killed for no reason or without warning, this is deemed to be unfair.

On the plus side, and despite of the lack of graphics, this type of game has a surprising lot going for it, and can be often played for longer than it’s flashing graphic, big budget counterparts.

From a game design, development perspective, a lot can certainly be learnt.
